Your guide to NDIS therapy funding

How the scheme works, who is eligible and which parts of your plan pay for occupational therapy, speech pathology and psychology.

What the NDIS is

The National Disability Insurance Scheme funds supports for Australians with a permanent and significant disability. It is person-centred: rather than one-size-fits-all services, participants receive an individual plan with funding tied to their own goals, and they choose who delivers the supports.

Who is eligible

  • Aged under 65 when you first apply
  • An Australian citizen, permanent resident or Protected Special Category visa holder
  • Living with a permanent and significant disability that substantially reduces your functional capacity, or a child under 9 who benefits from early intervention

Not sure? Our NDIS application page explains how we help with access requests.

How therapy is funded

Your plan is divided into budgets. Allied health therapy mostly comes from Capacity Building, which is designed to build your skills and independence over time.

Plan management types

  • Self-managed: you pay invoices and claim from the NDIS yourself, and can use any provider.
  • Plan-managed: a plan manager pays providers for you, and you can use registered or unregistered providers.
  • NDIA-managed: the NDIA pays registered providers directly. Vital Motion is registered, so we can work with all three.

Using your plan with Vital Motion

  1. Contact us with your plan details or ask your support coordinator to refer you.
  2. We check funding, agree goals and sign a service agreement.
  3. Therapy begins at home, school, work, in clinic or by telehealth.
  4. We write progress reports to support your next plan review.

Funding questions

Which NDIS budget pays for therapy?

Most therapy is funded under Capacity Building – Improved Daily Living. Behaviour support usually sits under Improved Relationships. Equipment and home modifications come from the Capital budget.

Do you work with all plan management types?

Yes: self-managed, plan-managed and NDIA-managed. We invoice you, your plan manager or claim through the NDIA portal as appropriate.

What is a service agreement?

A written agreement between you and us that sets out the supports, costs, how they'll be delivered and how either side can end the arrangement. We go through it with you before starting.

Can I change providers?

Yes. Choice and control is a core NDIS principle. If you move to us, we'll help you with the handover so therapy continues smoothly.

How does billing work?

We charge at or below the NDIS price limits. Travel and report-writing are billed according to the NDIS Pricing Arrangements, and we explain these before they apply.
